At #FOSDEM, 40% of attendees at the opening talk (in a full room with 1200 seats) raised their hand to signal this is the first time they attend.
This is super exciting for an old fart like me, who has been attending for 25 years.
There is hope for the future!

A very nice first day at FOSDEM. I spent time at the @matrix booth and met overwhelmingly enthusiastic people, then left it to our fabulous team of volunteers.
I’ve met Allan and @jsparber at the @gnome booth, got one of those fabulous systemd T-shirts, said hi to the @postmarketOS gang, got a T-shirt and brainstormed with @pabloyoyoista, got to thank Proxmox and OpenTofu for the great tools they provide.
#FOSDEM is where internet friends materialize.

Some nice themes running through the #SocialWeb Devroom at #FOSDEM: storytelling from different national and international contexts (Italy, Netherlands, Germany, Europe); new apps and ideas (badgefed, splinter, FASPs, Spritely); building infrastructure and foundational tech (Bonfire, Fedify, Emissary). This is really great momentum! The speaker list today has been wonderful.
Imagine how silly I felt when I realised I'd forgotten to bring my #fosdem earrings from @grafana with me. But these LED earrings running #tinygo made by @ayke have saved the day!
Wow, #FOSDEM *finally* recommends masks and has them available for free for anyone who asks. 🎉
If you're at FOSDEM in person and don't have a mask yet, go get one!
You don't have to use a mask all the time, but the more you use it, the more you're protecting yourself (and possibly others).
It makes lots of sense indoors whenever you're surrounded by a crowd. (Which is most of FOSDEM.)
The health of people in FOSS is important. Everyone in person plays a part in it. Masks help.
