Apparently, I could not let this go.
Web search tells me that the current bitcoin complexity is at 1,08e+14 and that multiplying this factor by 2^32 gives you the expected number of hashes to mine a block. The most efficient mining ASIC apparently uses 12 Joules per Th (trillion hashes).
That gives you a best case of ~1.5 GWh per block (every 10 minutes), which can be at most 4000 Transactions.
*Best* case: 386 kWh / transaction; 15 transactions / #38c3 (6 MWh)
