While you are trying to teach your students the many pitfalls and flaws of the PKI certificate system and to understand how authenticity (and thus secrecy) of communication can be threatened, 65% of the biggest apps in China, 13% of the apps in the google store simply use "encode-to-plaintext" as the fundamental communication protection. And a large portion of the companies that bother at all and are maybe not actively circumventing the protection that TLS might provide, are rolling their own crypto.
As if "Don't roll your own crypto!" is not the first and most often repeated recommendation in all classes that even barely touch the topic. Even — or especially — if you do not understand the reason behind it, you should be able to adhere to this one recommendation.
