I'm going to #FOSDEM in Feb. If you know if any of the teams who organise devrooms or similar spaces would be open to having CO2 sensors running in the rooms, and making the values visible to participants, I'd love to know.
It feels like an affordable project to do, and quite scalable too.
Actually… I'm doing a talk in the #inclusiveweb dev room anyway. I'm happy to start with bringing a sensor of my own if there's nothing better available.

Anyone else up for it?
I posted about air quality / indoor CO2 in rooms yesterday in #FOSDEM, and this project here appears to set up a fairly accurate in-room CO2 sensor (a SCD4x one) with a tiny ESP32 minicomputer.
The box can join wifi, and then expose the live CO2 values for scraping via Prometheus/Grafana, a well known monitoring/observability stack.
It even includes a 3D model for 3D printing the box, and sample code and links to buy the kit, for 30-40 EUR total.
I posted yesterday about air quality in packed rooms at #FOSDEM, and this came up in my feed here.
I think it's serious, and if I'm gonna go through the faff of learning about some of the HVAC and HEPA jargon, I figure it might be worth repurposing what I'm learning along the way into an article for the conf if nothing else, right?
#FOSDEM #FOSDEM2025 Also, TIL I learned that there is s #HackerTrain to FOSDEM started by a bunch of ppl in Slovenia!
Here's the forum post explaining it.

Also they've sorted out a 10% discount on the European Sleeper to get to Brussels. I *just* came back from Brussels to Berlin on the ES, and I'll almost definitely take it there now.
@alexglow do you remember the #5FootHighClub? It's becoming a thing!
@kittylyst @lornajane @katexochen @andypiper @otfrom @skylar @josh @gyptazy @czajkowski @karen @jabjoe @pikesley there's now an freely editable page of resources for indoor CO2 tracking for devrooms at #FOSDEM below

There's a longer form post below too:

Aw yiss! Got my #FOSDEM proposal accepted:

How do we work out the environmental savings from accessibility?
In this talk, we'll take a look how we can quantify the environmental savings from supporting a wider range of devices with the digital services we design and operate.

I guess I better write it now 😅.
If you'd be curious about this and you have qns you'd like me to cover in the talk leave a comment.
(I can't promise to answer it before #FOSDEM2025)

Oh neat! If you follow #FOSDEM - we now have 7 devrooms interested in doing indoor CO2 monitor thing! WOOT!
Here's the pad we're using to coordinate. If you are organising a devroom, or planning go to one at fosdem and would like to see some info about indoor CO2 (i.e. a rough proxy for air quality used for public health), then you can add yourself to the list below:

@diffrentcolours Ahoy! I agree that monitoring without a plan to make any changes isn't that helpful.
However, I think having some data makes it easier to propose changes in future. Some other folks and I made a submission a run a devroom to ourselves for #FOSDEM 2025, and we were looking into the options for setting up HEPA filters in case we were accepted.
This is likely gonna be a multi-year project - I'm going in with my eyes open 😅
