I'm going to in Feb. If you know if any of the teams who organise devrooms or similar spaces would be open to having CO2 sensors running in the rooms, and making the values visible to participants, I'd love to know.

It feels like an affordable project to do, and quite scalable too.

Actually… I'm doing a talk in the dev room anyway. I'm happy to start with bringing a sensor of my own if there's nothing better available.

How do we work out the environmental savings from accessibility? FOSDEM 2025

We know that using devices for longer can reduce the amount e-waste the world generates, but _how much_ can it help? In this talk, we'll take a look how we can quantify the environmental savings from supporting a wider range of devices with the digital services we design and operate. We'll look at the approach used by peer reviewed papers on induced hardware upgrades, and see how they track obscelence through user data, to see which techniques we can apply to our own work. In addition, we'll also look at a few high profile examples of companies ending support for older devices, or requiring beefier minimum spec hardware to help understand the environmental impact of these decisions. Finally, we'll conclude with a tour of the policy changes and dataset releases in different parts of the world, that show signs of a way forward out of this mess. These will be useful to people looking to refer to new laws being passed and new data to when making the argument for both accessibility and sustainability in the workplace.

Also they've sorted out a 10% discount on the European Sleeper to get to Brussels. I *just* came back from Brussels to Berlin on the ES, and I'll almost definitely take it there now.

I think it's serious, and if I'm gonna go through the faff of learning about some of the HVAC and HEPA jargon, I figure it might be worth repurposing what I'm learning along the way into an article for the conf if nothing else, right?

Hello, anyone who works for @Vivaldi gonna be at ?

I wanted to speak to someone to try to understand how hard doing this would be with Vivaldi, because I have an idea how difficult it was to do with Firefox, and I'm using it more and more for personal browsing.

I posted about air quality / indoor CO2 in rooms yesterday in , and this project here appears to set up a fairly accurate in-room CO2 sensor (a SCD4x one) with a tiny ESP32 minicomputer.

The box can join wifi, and then expose the live CO2 values for scraping via Prometheus/Grafana, a well known monitoring/observability stack.

It even includes a 3D model for 3D printing the box, and sample code and links to buy the kit, for 30-40 EUR total.

Not bad!

As an example, this I made a decision to start funding OSS I use myself via @ecosystems this year, because it does this.

Let me set a recurring amount , and solve the allocation problem for me, or at least make it engaging.

Don’t me a think every single time about whether I’ll donate and how much - I’ll usually drop out the funnel.
