UK Digital ID scheme problems aren't just about surveillance OggCamp 2026

In September 2025, Labour government has announced Digital ID scheme that will be introduced in future, which caused major uproar and discontent in a society because of it potentially being a tool for surveillance. While this is certainly a valid point to raise and is reason enough to object, one thing that is usually overlooked is ways it can limit accessibility and discriminate people on multiple fronts. In this session we will talk about how Digital ID proposal in its current form is flawed aside from surveillance part, specifically: - previous technology schemes by UK gov't related to identification (e.g eVisa, NHS Covid tracing) and problems with it; - risk of the scheme being centralised and incompatible with open standards; - what does the passing of weakened data protection law has to do with it; - lessons to learn from Digital ID schemes in another countries - both good and bad And finally, the proposals on the strategy that we, as an open-source community, should embrace.
