I had a good time at #OggCamp at the weekend. There were a few familiar faces, but there was a poll during the intro session where the presenter asked for how many people it was their first time, and between 25%-33% raised their hand, which made for a nice mix.
Polarian (from the XSF) wanted to give talk about Jabber / #XMPP, and I said I would help 😨 .
We originally wanted to have an XMPP stand at EMFCamp, but neither of us got tickets 😭
We managed to get some slides together which we when presented on the Sunday at OggCamp instead.
I tried to record it here: https://pt.gogreenit.net/w/7YzvYkDJVM1e5FcmnCpqkj and the slides (as you can't really see them on the video 😡) are here: https://codeberg.org/chewie/OggCamp-2026-XMPP-Talk, but the funky little USB-C wireless mics worked nicely with my phone!
Note to self for next time - reduce the contrast between the foreground and background of the slides if you want to record it with your phone...
The next #LightningTalk at #OggCamp was about Self-hosted Observability, using various #Grafana projects and #Prometheus etc.
Alan was using some #YAML files to provision the services via docker etc.
I didn't quite understand it all, but there's a few extra Grafana products I should check out - Alloy and Mimir.
Just heard an interesting talk about #BioPlastics by [email protected] at #OggCamp.
Alex was trying to make plastics from various materials at the Manchester HackSpace.
He was mostly using a material called Kylozin, which can make a substance called "Nacre", which has potential as a plastic replacement.
His end goal is to make an I-beam from the stuff.
