PyCon US 2024

Trey Hunner ๐Ÿ (41)

Out of curiosity, I searched for the hashtag on Mastodon and Twitter and scrolled back 16 hours and started counting posts. ๐Ÿค”

I counted:

87 posts on Twitter on the PyCon hashtag ๐Ÿฆ

134 posts on Mastodon on the PyCon hashtag ๐Ÿ˜

The PyCon conversations have finally moved (mostly) to Mastodon! ๐Ÿ™Œ

Not a HUGE difference, but enough that I felt like there was more activity and decided to confirm my suspicion. ๐Ÿ’—

I attended my first Python conference 10 years and 10 days ago.

I wrote a meandering and nostalgic blog post (complete with links to old group selfie tweets) about the last 10 years of being part of the wider community.

I'm really grateful I decided to attend PyCon 2014 and that I came back for PyCon 2015 and went to DjangoCon 2015 as well.

I decided to be for the week of 2024. I put little effort into this endeavor but I did think about it during each meal.

I'd like to share how it went, but first I'll note why I did this.

Since early 2020, I've been attempting to gradually reducing the animal suffering I cause (as much as I'm individually able to).

I focused one-by-one on small habit changes that had large impacts (e.g. I completely cut out chicken first). After ~2 years of this, I was .

Not one project is holding their sprint on the rooftop (4th floor). I feel like that's a missed opportunity here.

Guess which Norwegian, needleworking, library-indexing, BeeWare contributing folks are now on Mastodon in preparation for a future Python conference. ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ด๐Ÿงต๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ

What tips do you have for folks thinking of trying out Mastodon during this year?

3 of my tips:

1. Follow the hashtag (yes you can follow a hashtag just like following a profile!)
2. If you post and realize you forgot the hashtag, don't delete your post. Just edit it!
3. Consider following the hashtag also. Many folks use it without realizing that is the official one.

What tips do you have?

I'm loving all the positive statistics that @fedidevs have been posting on . Really fun to see how much Mastodon is being used during PyCon!

I'm also really enjoying knowing that we liked posts about Black Python Devs and COVID testing so much!

Can't link to a search, but "from:[email protected] after:2024-05-15 before:2024-05-21"

"If you haven't found your people, but know they are there, reserve an open space for a bit for them to meet. They probably want to meet you as much as you want to meet them!"

@joelle: this is an excellent description of open spaces!

BoFs (birds of a feather sessions) sounds a bit opaque, but I like that term for this reason.

Meetup organizers, brand new coders, Ruby to Python transplants, etc. Whoever your people are, it's worth putting an open space on the board to find them!
