@digiphile It's really pretty good as a virtual conference too. The #FWD50 folks have done a great job of creating a hybrid event.
@sboots may not say GOSLINGS on the #FWD50 stage, but worth raising them. Nerds and Nachos is the current form. @russellmcormond @mcr314 @mirgray were a key part of keeping that fire for open source burning.
Day 2 at #FWD50 2023 has wrapped!
From excellent keynotes in the morning to main stage takeovers (thank you Public Digital, the crew at RDGS, and the Beeck Center for Social Impact + Innovation), to interactive workshops taking place in-person and online (shout out to Apolitical), we couldn't have asked for more inspiring content on digital government!
Great points about vendor lock-in with the Beeck Center. The UK realized that they needed to break the cozy relationship between vendors and government agencies. #FWD50
"what's the cost of trusting people? Worst case scenario, a sick person gets health care" - @marthaedwards #fwd50 🔥
"Outcomes are independent of solutions" is an important concept to remember. #FWD50
“How do we get government to trust people?” and “what do we care more about - keeping the wrong people out or helping the right people in?” powerful questions from Martha Edwards on the burden placed on people to be able to access the services and products they are entitled to and eligible for #fwd50 #humancentreddesign #servicedesign #gcdigital #GCdata
When it comes to verification we need to ask if we are asking for too much? What is more important, keeping the wrong people out or letting the right people in? Martha Edwards at #FWD50
I bet more people would file taxes if they advertised the benefits like credit card companies.... #fwd50
On the subject of #podcasts here is one I have been enjoying recently https://www.wgbh.org/podcasts/the-big-dig on the topic of building big things. #FWD50
Can I throwback Tuesday to November 2019? Definitely missing not being at #fwd50 in person cc @robbutler
”The type of work that we need to do to have long-term ability to deliver services to Canadians is this core systems work. If we don't deal with the large platform issues that we've got… This is a 45-year long issue related to execution and our ability to get these hard programs done.” Catherine Luelo #fwd50
Morning from #FWD50 Day 2! Kicking off the day w “Why Societies Fail and What to do About it” and hanging w #GCData fave Julian Kirby and superstar #HCD researcher Suzie Lim Garrard.
I’m hyperfocused on data & trust in/trustworthiness of government so v looking forward to Martha Edwards on “Trust in Government Goes Both Ways”.
Let’s connect for some data nerd-ery if you’re physically here or DM me to connect another time!

@jukesie I’m most excited for Tom’s, Martha’s and Aaron & crew’s talk (I mean it includes @sboots). I hope that more of the audience joins us here on Mastodon because most of the conversation yesterday happened on X and I am trying hard not to give into the temptation to go back and engage on X with my fellow #fwd50 attendees.

Tom Loosemore said today, “Luck plays an important part in everyone’s lives.” And I think that should be recognized and talked about more. Right place at the right time. #smallthoughts #fwd50
Interesting insights from Martha Edwards, one of which is how people feel after interacting with your service is important. If we can't trust people can we at least make them feel trusted? #FWD50
Really great talk by @marthaedwards at #FWD50.
Why are we making it hard for everyone to get what they need from the government, just to try to avoid some risks?
I started my career as a call center agent at the CRA. The sheer complexity of it all was the incentive to go work in "forms, publications and web" h
- I wanted to make things simpler for people. This is still what drives me (all of us, I think) every day!
