I have literally no sense of scale for this talk about agile procurement of trains from living in Ottawa to be honest. “Can you imagine it taking 8 years to have trains?” Yes? Is that fast? Slow? #fwd50 #ottawa #octranspo

Morning from #FWD50 Day 2! Kicking off the day w “Why Societies Fail and What to do About it” and hanging w #GCData fave Julian Kirby and superstar #HCD researcher Suzie Lim Garrard.

I’m hyperfocused on data & trust in/trustworthiness of government so v looking forward to Martha Edwards on “Trust in Government Goes Both Ways”.

Let’s connect for some data nerd-ery if you’re physically here or DM me to connect another time!

“Liam is worth the risk.” @tomski on working radically in government for outcomes for real people. #gcdigital #GCdata #fwd50

Important reflection question from the audience for @tomski “how to we keep from being pushed out?”: Radical change is radical risk and not every environment will allow it at scale. Look for the small things where you can apply and win emotional debates by showing the results instead of trying to win intellectual debates [on untested assumptions]. #fwd50 #digitaltransformation #radicalhow #gcdigital #gcdata

The hot goss from this AM’s talk from Nele Leosk of the e-Estonia program is that you are now able to get married online and not yet get divorced online, but it’s coming soon 💁🏻‍♀️ #fwd50

At the forefront of my mind this morning listening in to #fwd50 is the power imbalance at the center of the relationship between a person and a government. The starting point can’t be the “service window” because those are the marginal outputs of an inequitable systems/policies/laws, not the source. Ie. Having smoother digital experiences with the govt in applying for services doesn’t improve trust in govt for marginalized communities experiencing police violence.

“There’s two models of care: innocent until proven guilt and guilty until proven innocent” Governments need to decide how they approach caring for people and often the default is the latter. “But what is the cost of not trusting people?” Martha Steward on trust and government at #fwd50 #servicedesign #humancentreddesign #gcdigital #gcdata

“How do we get government to trust people?” and “what do we care more about - keeping the wrong people out or helping the right people in?” powerful questions from Martha Edwards on the burden placed on people to be able to access the services and products they are entitled to and eligible for #fwd50 #humancentreddesign #servicedesign #gcdigital #GCdata

My own reflection is that I don’t yet know how to put my own oxygen mask on first. Being in the government since 2014, working on #GCData, has been being chronically burned out for 9 years and not always feeling like I’ve made a difference. I keep coming back because it’s worth it, but I worry it won’t continue to be up to me unless I change my own how as well. #gcdigital #DigitalTransformation #fwd50
