For those of you that are curious here is an excellent introduction to complexity and the public service https://markfoden.com/clockcat #fwd50 #Podcast @markfoden
It is a mistake to continue to engage in digital duality, between a “real world” & a virtual world.
I think Estonians grok this.
Far too many media, politicians, & civil servants still don’t.
Use offline & online.
Digital services & interactions are real.
Making them “other” is part of the problem.

“Even (as governments) if we can't trust people, in our core and in our policies, we can still make people feel trusted. That's really what matters – what people feel, when they're trying to access services, that will affect them or change their lives.” Martha Edwards #fwd50 @marthaedwards
Day 2 at #FWD50 2023 has wrapped!
From excellent keynotes in the morning to main stage takeovers (thank you Public Digital, the crew at RDGS, and the Beeck Center for Social Impact + Innovation), to interactive workshops taking place in-person and online (shout out to Apolitical), we couldn't have asked for more inspiring content on digital government!
@sboots may not say GOSLINGS on the #FWD50 stage, but worth raising them. Nerds and Nachos is the current form. @russellmcormond @mcr314 @mirgray were a key part of keeping that fire for open source burning.
@digiphile It's really pretty good as a virtual conference too. The #FWD50 folks have done a great job of creating a hybrid event.
"I had to move the public service to deliver as quickly as possible." Minister Anita Anand on procuring PPE early in the pandemic #fwd50
Great points by Kris Lovejoy about the importance in data when it comes to AI. Love that she highlighted Augmented Intelligence, Another great speaker at #FWD50

Anita Anand mentions there are 30,000 vacancies for digital jobs in the GC. As a former GC-er who moved to the provincial ps, wonder how much flight there has been to other jurisdictions, and if there's any good learnings there... #fwd50
Resonant hits from @acroll’s @fwd50 #FWD50 opener: Salmon ladders of incremental progress beyond the meta-obstacle of systemic barriers to progress, the reminder that we’re all part of - and contributing to - that system and so have an opportunity to contribute to lifting others up, and this … love and have been practicing hacks for many years, celebrate hacking co-conspirators … and yet …
.@acroll referencing salmon ladders in his morning #fwd50 talk. The concrete salmon ladders down the street from my house in BC were recently removed - they'd been thrown up decades ago, and were recently replaced with a more natural envt. Extra metaphor?!
"Governments that abandon an 80-year old lonely man don't deserve our trust" - @acroll #fwd50 [abt blindly following scripts/process and notlearning from/ responding to the impact on real people]
@afhill Stuart Brand's Pace Layers are great.
I was looking at ways to apply his ideas to government https://codepen.io/mgifford-the-typescripter/pen/qBoYKoP
Leaving YOW en route home from #FWD50, feeling equal parts physically drained & psychoemotionally re-invigorated. In particular, referring to one of the inimitable @honeygolightly’s slides, inviting us into a next phase, feeling motivated to contribute to cultivating what comes next.…
”We are all part of the solution, we can’t just stay stagnant and blame other people. We have to take action.” Xiaopu Fung #fwd50
