Do we consider digital a “discipline” or “a way of working” in government? - Robyn Scott from Apolitical, #fwd50
I just bought Marina Nitze
& Nick Sinai
book #HackYourBureaucracy for a friend in #government. https://hackyourbureaucracy.com
After watching Marina at #FWD50 & at the IOG's #ELPdigi
I am convinced that any #CivilServant seeking to create change should read it.
I have to actually work today so I'll be listening to #fwd50 but not posting as much ;)
Hahaha Martha Lane Fox is awesome!
Compelled by Jacqueline Lu’s #FWD50 talk re: dtpr.io, and motivated to be involved in what she and the Helpful Places team is up to on trust + transparency in the built environment … including built trails, like this new one on Whistler/Blackcomb, where we’ve deployed sensors to better understand recreator numbers and impacts.
Government code is littered with comments of "I didn't have the opportunity to get the policy intent clarified, so I made my best guess during implementation". - Jennifer Pahlka, #FWD50 Teams need to be working cross-functionally. Can't just throw business reqts/policy statements over the fence at developers and expect good results
I was surprised at the Terry Beech talk. Very good.
Somebody tell him to join the Fediverse ;)
Passport checker lets people understand the status of their request. This is a 'small' thing that can dramatically improve how people perceive service delivery.
UXers may recognize this as the heuristic "visibility of system status", which is one of the basics of good design. #fwd50
I love the passport checker.
Being able to keep people from having to call in is a huge benefit.
@pahlkadot I like to try and tend the public service garden.... Good metaphor.
@pahlkadot "I must be on the wrong page, this is too easy to use" sometimes I think if it's easy it's the scam version of the page.
"Teams were enthusiastic but they were struggling with the constraints of the system." Ebony Sager #fwd50
At the forefront of my mind this morning listening in to #fwd50 is the power imbalance at the center of the relationship between a person and a government. The starting point can’t be the “service window” because those are the marginal outputs of an inequitable systems/policies/laws, not the source. Ie. Having smoother digital experiences with the govt in applying for services doesn’t improve trust in govt for marginalized communities experiencing police violence.
