FOSDEM 2025

Richard "RichiH" Hartmann (24)

Two weeks! Two. Whole. WEEKS!

As of 30 minutes ago, the published videos from 2025 have more than TWO WEEKS OF TOTAL RUNTIME!

If you sat down on day 1 in the morning and started watching videos all day every day, no breaks and no sleep, you would still be watching by the time we're sitting down for the Post Mortem in Brussels next Saturday noon. And we still have 100+ videos left to finish.

Largest conference on Earth.

Another ask/offer:

We are actively interested in loaning our video boxes to other conferences. If you want an easy, , and way to record video and laptop, do let me know.

And yes, they frickeled the microphones just before the talk, normally the sound quality is good. We're aware of the irony :)

Retoots appreciated, as always.

@fosdem yesterday, we had our post mortem meeting. Blown up to seven hours straight, and we only got through everything by aggressively skipping and timeboxing -- after(!) moving half of it to the kick-off... Almost twenty people on site in Brussels with half a dozen more calling in.

There's a LOT of details and discussions to running a successful

Afterwards, we had dinner together

@fosdem And then, I closed out with the closing keynote: fosdem.org/2025/schedule/event

Second time in a row that I couldn't do the closing dance for health reasons, hopefully 2026 is better.

But no matter if kidney stone, car accident, or whatever. I'd attend in a wheelchair if need be.

With the amount of public and private notifications of people contracting / , , , and a plethora of other illnesses transmitted through the respiratory system, I'm quite happy with opportunistically but largely consistently at . I'm fine, but I only consider our group clear by the 6th. Everyone in this group is ated to their teeth of course, that helps.

Anyway, you'll see me at in public spaces again.

Consider doing the same?

One thing that is largely invisible to the attendees: We spend thousands of hours every single year in between editions on making the next FOSDEM a success.

It's seemingly endless work, but it's very much worth it.

I have to admit that the "1000 talks" for is such a clean number that it feels made up, but it's actually a precise count as of today.

Speaking of .. it will be our 25th anniversary!

Is there anything you would like me to cover during the opening and closing talks? Anything fun? Anything important? The next week or two is a great time to let me know

The total amount of released video from is now over one whole week! And we're still going!

As you can see from our dashboard we had some bugs in the transcoding pipeline, but things are getting fixed and we're making good progress. We also added more VMs to the transcoding pool. The jump cut bug should also have been fixed.

If you have been waiting for a re-cut or not submitted a cut for your talk yet, this Sunday is a great time to take a look!

@fosdem I didn't get to start the slides until 23:30 and only finished at 09:08, but the opening slides were done and presented successfully. Only five more sessions to go :)
